Install WordPress

DUE Sunday, Mar 25 – 5 points
(Monday NOON deadline)

  • Gradebook Declaration: I have installed WordPress on my web server. When I visit this WordPress installation on my web server, I see the site displayed correctly. I have successfully logged into this WordPress installation.

For this assignment, you will need to install WordPress on your web server. Many web hosting companies offer “one-click installs” of WordPress. If your host does not offer this, you’ll have to install it manually.

1. Web Host Installer (Quick Way)

Here are links to articles about how to install WordPress on a number of different web hosts. If your host does not offer a simple installer like this, you can instead follow the full instructions below:

2. Install WordPress Manually (Long Way)

The instructions in the tutorials linked below walk you through the process that will work on hosts that do not have this a one-click install option: this includes downloading the WordPress software, unzipping it, FTP’ing it to you server, and walking through the WordPress installation script. Michael at Solostream has a good tutorial called How to Install WordPress. He also has a narrated screencast walking through this tutorial, which I have included below. (He is using a different web host, so creating a MySQL database will be a little different. Check out the links in the next section below.)

Create a MySQL database

One of the steps in installing WordPress is to create a MySQL database. Here are links to instructions for doing this on the three web hosting companies I recommended:

FTP

I have provided instructions for uploading files through FTP on a previous activity: consult 07. BONUS: FTP Program for instructions on finding FTP information. (While I would strongly encourage you to get an FTP program, you could also upload WordPress using tools in your host’s control panel. See 07. Technology Activity for instructions on using those tools.)

Log In / Change Password

You need to make sure that you can log in to the WordPress installation on your web server. When you are looking at the home page, you can add /wp-admin/ to the end of the web address to access the dashboard. I would recommend that you change your password from the automatically generated one to something easier to remember. I walked through how to change your password on your course blog in the very first video; the instructions at 1:55-2:55 of this video are the same for changing your password within your own WordPress installation.
