• Gradebook Declaration: I have installed a WordPress themeand activated it from within the WordPress installation on my web server.

For this assignment, you will need to install and activate a WordPress theme on your web server. The theme you install for this assignment does not need to be the theme you plan to use for your final project, but I would recommend it. If you already know what theme you want to use, feel free. But if you have not yet picked a theme, it is probably best to install something minimalistic like Toolbox.

I have included two videos in the instructions below. They both actually try to do the same thing — show you how to download a WordPress theme and upload it to your server — though they do each piece in different ways. I recommend downloading the theme according to the instructions in the first video and uploading the theme according to the instructions in the second video.

This video shows the full process using the Bluehost file manager, but the first part of the video (through 1:13) on downloading WordPress themes applies to everyone.

(2) Upload Theme

I have provided instructions for uploading files through FTP on a previous activity: consult 07. BONUS: FTP Program for instructions on finding FTP information. (While I would strongly encourage you to get an FTP program, you could also upload WordPress using tools in your host’s control panel. See 07. Technology Activity for instructions on using those tools.)

The video in the section above shows you how to upload a theme to your web server using Bluehost’s file manager; the video below shows you how to upload a theme using an FTP program. Start this video at about 1:45; the video is quite dated, and the first part is no longer useful. He uses Go FTP in this video, but Filezilla or any other FTP client will work just as well. He’s also using an older version of WordPress; when he clicks on Design in the top navigation, you’ll want to click “Appearance” in the side navigation.
