Site Structure Blog Post
DUE Sunday, Mar 04 – 6 points
(Monday NOON deadline)
- Gradebook Declaration: I have published a blog post on my course blog that is between 300 and 1000 words long. The post contains at least three text hyperlinks to other web sites and at least one embedded image or a link to an attachment I created. I have spellchecked and proofread the post.
You have been assigned to write a few different posts about the web site you are going to build for your final project: looking at your site objectives, your intended visitors, and your domain name. Now it’s time to get more specific about how your site will be structured. For this assignment, you will need to create a post in your course blog defining the structure of your final project web site. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- What is your final domain name? Is it different than the one you wrote about two weeks ago? If it is different or if you had proposed more than one name in that post, how did you make your final decision?
- Will you need a new photo of yourself for this site? Will you need a logo?
- What pages will your site have?
- A common deliverable to answer this question is a visual site map. Jesse James Garrett (the guy who coined the term “AJAX,” incidentally) has a great tutorial on information architecture documentation. You don’t need to read every word of that tutorial, but you might want to create a site map like his examples for this assignment. (It need not be in a fancy format, either: you can sketch it on paper. If possible, you should digitize your site map and attach it to your blog post.)
- What content will be on each of these pages? Will it be all text? Or do you need images or videos on these pages?
- Do you have any thoughts about the overall layout of the site?
- A common format for the answers to this question is the wireframe. Here’s a five-minute video explaining wireframes, what they are and when to use them. (You might want to create some wireframe for this assignment. They need not be in a fancy format, either: you can sketch them on paper. If possible, you should digitize your wireframes and attach them to your blog post.)
- Will you include a resume? If so, will this be an HTML page inside your site’s branding, or will it be a PDF download?
- Will you have a portfolio? If so, how will each piece be displayed? (For example, will you have one picture and a paragraph of text? Or will you have a slideshow of images with a single sentence for the piece?)
- What is your site’s main “call to action”? In other words, what is the main thing you want people who visit your site to do? Email you? Call you? Follow you on Twitter? Subscribe to RSS? Send you money? Sign a petition? Leave a comment? Buy a product? Change their views on politics, religion, or social issue?
- Will you have a blog? If so, what topics will you be writing about? What will the format for a typical blog post be? Will all the blog posts be of the same format? Or will you have different formats?
Once you have completed this assignment, make your gradebook declaration.
