Starting Assumptions

  • Gradebook Declaration: I have published a blog post on my course blog that is at least 150 words long. I have spellchecked and proofread the post.

This week, we will be looking at how the internet works. We won’t be delving into protocols or advanced server configurations or anything like that, but we will be covering the material at a level with which all web generalists running web sites should be comfortable. We will spend some additional time looking specifically at image formats used on the web.

For this assignment, you’ll need to write a short post on your course blog about your familiarity with these topics. I have provided a list of questions below to give you some ideas about what you might want to write:

  • You open up your computer and visit a web site. How did that happen? How many computers did it take to get that to you? What other pieces of hardware?
  • Does TCP/IP mean anything to you? What about ISP? What needs to be in place for a request for your domain name return an HTML file that you wrote?
  • What’s a web browser? What kind of code can it read? What can it NOT read?
  • Do you know the difference between client-side and server-side?
  • Describe AJAX. Who invented the term? What’s the benefit of using over something else to achieve the same goal? What are its drawbacks?
  • Do you know what AJAX stands for?
    • If so, you know that the first “A” relates to when it happens in relation to other things. Why is this important? What initiates an AJAX call and what does it call for?
    • If so, you know that the “J” stands for a programming language. What is it? Does it run on the server-side or the client-side?
    • If so, you know that the second “A” stands for “and.” I don’t have any questions about that.
    • If so, you know that the “X” stands for a file format. What is it? Why is this used instead of a different format?
  • Do you know which five of the following are image formats?  MLB, JPG, GIF, FTP, PNG, DNS, ROFL, TMN, ATOM, BMP, PDF, SVG?
  • Of the five that are images formats, do you know which three should be used on the web today? Do you know when to use which one? Do you know which one you’ll probably never use on the web? Do you know which one many people hope you’ll get to use in the future?

Once you have completed this assignment, make your gradebook declaration.
