Reflections Essay

  • Gradebook Declaration: I have published a blog post on my course blog that is between 300 and 1000 words long. The post contains at least one image and at least three text hyperlinks to other web pages. I have spellchecked and proofread the post.

During the second half of the semester, many of the assignments will contribute directly to a final project. Instead of simply having one assignment – “Build a web site” – due all at once at the end of the semester, the assignments for seven weeks will culminate in a completed web site. Students will be required to give a five-minute presentation discussing their final project to the class and a panel of EMAC faculty during the final two class periods.

But it’s time to start thinking about that final project now. For this assignment, you will need to create a post in your course blog presenting some ideas for your final project web site. Think about this both in terms of what we covered in Week 2 (branding) and in Week 3 (defining a web site owner). Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Look back at your Introductory Blog Post. This is the picture of yourself that you wanted to portray to your fellow students. What things interest you so much that you had to tell everyone? Is there anything important to you that you left out?
  • Do an internet search for your name using your favorite search engine. What do you find? Is it you or is it someone else? If it is you, do the search results portray the picture of yourself that you described in your Introductory Blog Post? The picture you want to portray in your final project? Some other picture? Could your website for this class be part of changing that or enforcing that?
  • Are you involved in a group or organization that does not have a website (a book club, a non-profit organization, an Ultimate Frisbee team)? If so, what would the site objectives be?
  • Have you previously created something that needs a website to showcase it? An iPhone app? A short film? A collection of poetry? Are you creating something like that for another class this semester?
  • If you have some idea of what you want to build for your final project, consider writing something like a website review in advance. Look back at the questions for the Website Review: what will a review of your final project say after your project is finished?
    • What are your objectives?
    • What is your unique selling proposition?
    • Who is your intended audience?
  • If you are having trouble thinking of something for your final project, consider completing one or more of the exercises from the Explore section of the Spark workbook (mind-mapping, brainstorming, etc.) and posting the results as part of this assignment. Think of as many ideas as you can.
