  • Gradebook Declaration: I have published a blog post on my course blog that is between 300 and 1000 words long about community. I have spellchecked and proofread the post. I have made a conscious effort to employ the techniques we discussed for writing better content for the web.

Last week, we covered material related to promoting your web site through broadcast tools and through community tools. For this assignment, you will need to create a post in your course blog discussing your thoughts on these topics. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • What is the difference between broadcast tools and community tools? Do they both have their place, or is one set better than the other? What are the objectives of each?
    • What are the different kinds of broadcast tools Paul discusses? When should you use each of these?
    • What are the different kinds of community tools Paul discusses? Why does he recommend different tools for the different sizes of a web site?
  • We talked quite a bit about corporate blogging before spring break: how have your thoughts on that topic changed over the semester — and particularly over the last two weeks talking about community? Are blogs broadcast tools or community tools?
  • What does it take for a company or a group of individuals to run broadcast tools? community tools? Is it easy? is it hard? Why do it?
    • Do you receive any content through a company’s broadcast tool? Why or why not? What value does it provide you? What does the company hope to achieve through it?
    • Do you participate in any online communities? Why or why not? What value does this participation provide you? What does the community manager(s) hope to achieve through running it?
  • Do you think Twitter and Facebook are communities? Do you use either of them? Why or why not?
  • Have you used any of these tools (broadcast or community) in building your final projects? Do you plan to add them?
  • What have you learned about community by participating in this class, reading and commenting on each other’s work and participating in the Live Discussion area?
