Starting Assumptions
DUE Tuesday, Mar 06 – 2 points
(Wednesday NOON deadline)
- Gradebook Declaration: I have published a blog post on my course blog that is at least 150 words long. I have spellchecked and proofread the post.
This week, we will be talking about design and about writing for the web. For this assignment, you’ll need to write a short post on your course blog about your familiarity with these topics. I have provided a list of questions below to give you some ideas about what you might want to write:
Design
- Which sites have you reviewed (or seen in other students’ reviews) that have good visual design? Any with bad designs? What makes them work for you? Are you in the sites target audience? Do you have to be in the target audience for your opinion to matter?
- What’s your favorite color? Does that matter when designing a web site of which you will be the web site owner?
- What is the role of a web site’s home page? How has that role changed in the last five or ten years? What type of information should go on a web site’s home page?
- What is screen resolution?
- What is the resolution of the monitor you are currently using at this moment? Do you know offhand? If not, how could you figure out what it?
- How does the appearance of a web site change as a monitor’s resolution is increased? decreased?
- Do you know what people when they talk about “the fold” in relationship to web design? Do you know what other industry this term came from? Is “the fold” a helpful concept when translated to the web?
- How are colors on computers specified? How many colors can computer monitors display? Do all monitors display colors in the same way?
- What is a font? (Hint: I don’t mean the archaic word for “fountain.”) Does the computer you are using right now have any fonts on it? If so, how many do you think it has (roughly three, ten, one hundred, four thousand)? If not, where could you get them? Why would you need one?
Writing for the Web
- Do you read websites differently than you read a textbook? If so, how? What about the two technologies (computer screen with lights vs. paper with ink) accounts for those differences?
- Have you done much writing for the web outside of this class? How did you approach it differently?

Once you have completed this assignment, make your gradebook declaration.
