- Gradebook Declaration: I have published a blog post on my course blog that is at least 150 words long. I have spellchecked and proofread the post.
This week we will be reading the first chapter of the Website Owner’s Manual, looking at what exactly a web site owner is and what that person should be doing. Along with that more conceptual topic, we will also dive into a some more technical topics: HTML and RSS.
For this assignment, you’ll need to write a short post on your course blog about your familiarity with these topics. I have provided a list of questions below to give you some ideas about what you might want to write:
- Have you ever been involved in running a web site? Have you written blog posts for a personal blog or guest posts for someone else’s blog? Have you volunteered to update content for your church web site or to maintain an online calendar for your book club, etc.?
- Do you know where you might examples of HTML? If an example of HTML were standing next to examples of PHP, Java, and Ruby in a police lineup, would you be able to identify the HTML? What kind of a software application do you use to write it? To read it?
- Do you know what HTML stands for?
- If so, you’ll know that the “HT” part makes up one concept. Do you know any other examples of an “HT” system? How long have people been studying “HT”?
- If so, you’ll know that the “ML” part also makes up one concept. Do you know any other examples of an “ML”? What special punctuation characters does an “ML” use?
- What is RSS good for? When would you use it? If an example of RSS were standing next to an example of HTML in a police lineup, would you be able to identify the RSS?
- Do you knowingly use RSS? (You most likely are at least unknowingly using it!) What kind of software application do you use to write it? To read it? Do you use any of these applications? What applications do you use that work with RSS?
- Do you know what RSS stands for? RSS is an example of another “ML” but not HTML: do you know what “ML” is used for RSS?
-
Have you ever seen an icon like this before?
Where? What does it mean? Is it related to HTML, RSS, both, or neither? Have you ever clicked an icon like this? Did anything meaningful happen?
