Starting Assumptions

  • Gradebook Declaration: I have published a blog post on my course blog that is at least 150 words long. I have spellchecked and proofread the post.

This week, we will be talking about web standards. We will be focusing on the technical topic of CSS, but we’ll also be exploring the history of the internet and touching on the more conceptual topic of accessibility.

For this assignment, you’ll need to write a short post on your course blog about your familiarity with these topics. I have provided a list of questions below to give you some ideas about what you might want to write:

  • Do you know what CSS stands for?
    • If so, what do you know about the “C” concept? What does it have to say about which CSS rules are applied? What does the “specificity” mean in his context? Where can CSS rules be placed, and how is the location related to this “C”concept?
    • If so, what do you know about the first “S”? Give some examples of some of the “S”s that CSS rules can change.
  • Do you know where you might find examples of CSS? If an example of HTML were standing next to examples of PHP, Java, and Ruby in a police lineup, would you be able to identify the HTML? What kind of a software application do you use to write it? To read it?
  • Have you heard the term “web standards” before? What names (either of people or of organizations) do you associate with that term?
  • Does the phrase “browser wars” mean anything to you?
    • Do you know what a browser is? Are they things you fight over (like treasure), or are they things you fight with (like swords), or do they fight against other browsers?
    • If so, who were the opponents in the “war”? Are they over? (If so, who won? If not, who’s winning?)
  • Do you know who invented the internet?
  • Do you know what a screen reader is? Do you know if it is a person, a company, a piece of software, or a piece of hardware? Who would benefit from working with a screen reader?

Once you have completed this assignment, make your gradebook declaration.
