This week, we’ll be getting started with introductory posts on our course blogs. In class we’ll be discussing the many different kinds of websites and internet services, including websites that promote an individual’s knowledge or skills.

Welcome

ATEC 3361.002 (“Internet Studio”) is being offered to EMAC majors at the University of Texas at Dallas in the Spring 2012 semester. This course will provide undergraduate students with a working knowledge of the core technologies behind the internet: HTML, CSS, domain registration, web hosting, JavaScript, server-side scripting, FTP, and more.

Course Overview

Final Project

The course will cover how these internet technologies are encapsulated into content management systems, spending considerable time looking at  WordPress as an example. The final project will include developing a WordPress web site using the concepts and the technologies discussed throughout the course.

(Students will be required to register a domain name and purchase web hosting; the details will be discussed during the first few weeks of the course.)

Textbook

In addition to many free online resources (blog posts, podcasts, etc.), this course will use as a textbook the Website Owner’s Manual by the internationally-renowned web designer, consultant, and podcaster Paul Boag.

Students will need to have this book for a reading assignment in Week 3 (January 30): it should be available in the bookstore, but it can also be purchased through a number of other channels as a printed book or as a PDF download.

About the Instructor

Randy Hoyt works as an information architect and web developer for a digital agency in Dallas. He began building web sites twelve years ago, starting with a personal web site and school projects in college. He has held a handful of information technology positions, including an implementation consultant for a web-based software company and a front-end web developer for a large retail company. He is an active member of the WordPress community in Dallas, having given presentations at a number of local WordPress events like WordCamp Dallas.
